Supprting The Jason Taylor Foundation

Coral Gables, September, 2015

“Cool Gear for the School Year” provides underserved children the opportunity to participate in a unique back-to-school shopping experience at Old Navy as part of the new school year.  The program’s purpose is to help build each child’s self-esteem and eliminate an unnecessary distraction, allowing them to focus on their studies and not their attire while at school.  Meeting athletes and celebrities was cool, but the highlight of the event was the opportunity to give back to the underserved youth in our community while teaching our own children the importance of philanthropy.  For the second year in a row, Wealth Management Advisor Rich Goodman and his family participated in the event and this year they were joined by Managing Director Robert Poleo and his family.

Broward Health Foundation - Annual Black Tie Ball

"I was so thrilled when Northwestern Mutual agreed to be the video sponsor for the black tie Broward Health Ball. Kevin Lawhon and Joe Pascale were so committed to making the best possible video that would be shown prior to our live auction. The video encouraged donations to our Virtual Hospital project and the important  training it offers to nurses throughout the hospital system. The video helped us raise $120,000. Joe spent countless hours filming and editing to make sure the finished product was perfect. The combination of time, talent and generosity makes Northwestern Mutual a true partner of Broward Health Foundation, and we look forward to a long relationship."

4thAnnual “I Make A Difference Awards” Sponsored by

Northwestern Mutual – The South Florida Group

Eight well-deserving student philanthropists honored for

making a positive impact in the lives of others

“Not too long ago, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting the professional staff of The Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation.  The leadership of the Foundation is comprised of consummate professionals, who are dedicated individuals with large hearts and incredible passion for the children they serve,” said Northwestern Mutual Financial Representative Matt Olsen.  “We’re are proud to be associated with the Foundation and the prestigious Miami Children’s Hospital.  Having a foothold in the community is a priority for our company and touching the lives of children is part of that commitment.”

The Hugs & Kisses Fashion Show, now in its 12thyear, featured children ranging from infants to 13 years of age, each rocking the runway in the hottest fashions, courtesy of GAP Kids.  The event also honored the beneficiaries of the I Make A Difference Award, presented by Northwestern Mutual.

Olsen continued, “Making A difference in the lives of others – now that’s a pretty noble choice.  Your choice to make a difference should not end on this day, but rather become a way of life, a way of thinking and a foundation for your moral compass.   When you sit back and reflect on this day and the honor that has been bestowed upon each of you, I’d like you to remember one thing.  There is nothing more gratifying than ‘giving back’ to humankind.”

CBS4 News Anchor Shannon Hori and Olsen presented eight well-deserving student philanthropists with the I Make A Difference Award.  More than 175 children, parents and grandparents came together for the celebration held on May 1, 2011 at the Ritz-Carlton on Miami Beach.  Hori has a special connection with Miami Children’s Hospital.  Her 2-year old son Clot, who was born with a congenital heart defect and cleft palate, receives care at the world-class hospital.  “We are so grateful to our doctors, nurses and therapists at Miami Children’s Hospital because we know without them we would not be here today, “ said Hori.  We are happy to do anything we can to support them.”

Following the presentation of awards, Olsen had some words of inspiration for the honorees.  “I give to you my personal congratulations and on behalf of Northwestern Mutual, I say:  thank you for making a difference.  In doing so, others will follow your example and “our world” will be a better place.”

The Adventures of MR. POTATO HEAD bring

“big” smiles to the faces of hundreds of children:  sick and well, alike

Northwestern Mutual – The South Florida Group and The Striano Financial hosted a special excursion for 200 children from the South Florida area to experience the much-loved MR. POTATO HEAD Character. On Saturday, May 7that the Miami Children’s Museum.

On this day, deformities were not noticed; chemotherapy was not talked about, surgical scars were not visible, developmental disabilities appeared normal.  And more than 50 children in foster-care joined in on the fun.  Sick and well children came together for one purpose:  a good time packed full of adventure.

From trips to outer space to jungle safaris and archeological digs, children are captivated with this unique learning experience.  Sponsored and funded by the Northwestern Mutual Foundation, The Adventures of  MR. POTATO HEAD is a 2,500 square foot exhibit currently on a multi-city tour  throughout the United States.

The children attending on behalf of the charities were joined by Northwestern Mutual employees, their families and clients.  The excursion concluded with each child receiving a MR. or MRS. POTATO HEAD, compliments of Hasbro, Inc., who donated the product for this occasion.

Northwestern Mutual – The South Florida Group Goes Gold for Cars, Cocktails and Cuisine in Support of Betty Cares at Miami Children’s Hospital

Amid the background of pink Cadillac’s, a 1934 Texaco gasoline tanker and an old-fashioned Good Humor ice cream truck, nearly 200 community and business leaders recently took a tour down memory lane with a rare look at classic cars from nearly every decade at the Cars, Cocktails and Cuisine event held on May 7, 2011 and benefiting Betty Cares at The Miami Children’s Hospital.

With the Dauer Museum of Classic Cars as the backdrop, this upscale event was hosted by Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation Diamond Society members Kira and Jason Turchin.

Northwestern Mutual Financial Representative Matt Olsen said, “We are all touched by the Betty Brenman story.  Kira Turchin, Betty’s daughter, moved us all with her warm tribute to her mother and those who have followed in her footsteps to support children and caregivers at Miami Children’s Hospital.  It’s a wonderful thing to behold to see benevolence of this magnitude continue and become a legacy for giving back.”

Guests enjoyed performances by Broadway star Adam Kantor who played “Mark” in Rent and “Henry” in Next to Normal and also founded Broadway South Africa.

Remaining true to Betty’s altruistic character, Betty Cares is dedicated to those individuals who often neglect themselves while caring for their loved ones, especially children.

Olsen continued, “This was a terrific evening.  Northwestern Mutual is proud to be a Gold Sponsor of this event and, moreover, of The Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation and its mission.  Funding world-class care is a good idea.  In doing so, we are helping to build a strong foundation for the children.”
